As the UK’s largest native land mammal, Red Deer are quite at home in a farmed environment. They follow a well defined annual cycle beginning with the breeding season, or “Rut” in autumn through to calving from mid-may to early August.
Like the Belted Galloway Cattle, the Red Deer, being relatively recently domesticated, are intended to be relatively low maintenance. They very rarely require any assistance with calving and are finished on grass alone, resulting in a very lean and healthy alternative to more traditional red meat options.
